Just finished Veganuary how to go vegan. Difficult reading about the slaughter practices. Think I need to read Pride and Prejudice again. Love Catherine Cookson Dinner of herbs! Tend to read lots of how to books just now.

I could never get into any of the Jane Austen or Bronte sisters books, although I like Catherine Cookson ones and Lark Rise to Candleford. I'm still ploughing through the Lincoln Rhyme crime series by Jeffery Deaver (12 in all, I think he's just brought out a 13th, and I'm only on No. 5). Although I love reading, I don't read nearly as much as I used to. Think it's partly because of husband being home now - I used to read in the mornings whilst he was in bed, and always read for 30 mins or so when I went to bed....can't do that now as he can't sleep with my lamp on!

I brought book no. 7 in the Jeffery deaver Lincoln Rhyme series away with me and finished it early this morning. I do love his books, there are so many twists and turns and he keeps you guessing right to the very end.
We went to Budleigh Salterton again this morning to look in the charity shops, several very nice ones there, one that looked like a high end boutique gift shop, although the prices were pretty good. I found an excellent quality copy of Nigel Slater's Kitchen Diaries book II, new price £30, got it for £4. Very happy, he's one of my favourite cooks and I love the way he writes. I already have the first diary and was waiting to find the second at a good price.

Finished 'Doctor' Barnardo', it really opened my Eyes, think everybody thinks of him as a kind old Man, I certainly thought he was English, but not so, he was born in Ireland, of ewish immigrant Parents, and as a young Man, converted to Christianity, and became an Evangelical Preacher, while studying as a Doctor in London. He was never a fully fledged Doctor, he was never going to do anything but preach, so he got, what was a sort of Hall, and used to hold Meetings. He was putting out the Fire, to go home to his Lodgings, when a small Boy, crept in, shivering, in Rags, and asked if he could sleep in the Hall, as it was freezing outside. He could not leave him in the Hall, so took him home with him, washed, and fed him, and the rest is History. He had no Money, so he started to preach, and Lobby, and ended up, with Homes for Girls, in the Country, small Homes, with House Mothers, and after his own Daughter was born with Down's Syndrome, even had Places for them. A wonderful charismatic Man, wish I could have shaken his Hand! Am waiting for my next Book, which might come today, about the Seventh Earl of Shaftsbury, who was also a Champion of the poor.

Can't remember his Name, but will find it out, have sent for this Book, Fiona, introduced me to the Author. He sounds Italian, anyway, he believes in growing more unusual Veg, as he says, quite rightly, you can buy the same Veg in the Supermarket, granted, it does not have the same Flavour, but would be nice to grow something different. Still be growing my Favourites though, what I know works up here, Tomatoes, Sungold, and Shirley, for Starters. Nearly time to put Seeds in, feeling happy

Daughter gave me a small shopping bag of books to read a couple of weeks ago. I'm half way through Clare Balding's memoir - My Animals and Other Family. She writes about her life through memories of her dogs and horses. I'm finding it quite entertaining. Had no idea she is from such a grand family with lots of eccentric members. Her anecdotes make me chuckle (including the one where she had been out early with her pony, came indoors for breakfast in her dirty clothes, ignored the housekeeper's warning and flew through the dining room door, slipped in her stockinged feet, fell over and slid across the floor only to find that the Queen was having breakfast with her father and other family members. Clare carried on as though it was an everyday occurrence and so did the Queen, graciously ignoring her unfortunate entrance. Light bedtime reading.

Not my Cuppa Tea, but would read it, And anything that helps us get through this awful time, also have Bags of Books, to be honest, would read anything, but would not finish it, if I did not enjoy it. My favourites, are Autobiographies, anything by the Man who wrote 'A Small Island, can't remember his Name, but he writes Travel Books, but funny, with it. Alan Titchmarsh, earthy, as you might expect, not Gardening earthy. and Historical Romances, but not the B Cartland Ones, Tall, dark, and Loathsome, nearly put me off Pink for Life, been better if it had put me off Men! Good Historical Novels, are so expensive now.

I currently have a few 'environmental-type' books, given to me by daughter, all of which make easy reading. I'm not keen on thrillers or murders - anything like that. I suppose I prefer the romance-type - makes me sound a bit shallow, but doesn't give me nightmares!! :-)

Not at all Val, I don't read that type of Book either. I have found the Author of the Book I have sent for, it is ; The Speedy Vegetable Garden' by Mark Diacono. It is about tasty, and unusual Vegetables, but also as the Name implies, Vegetables, that do not take long to mature. Also like early Settler Books, in Australia, and America, could read 'Little House on the Prarie, spelt it wrong, over, and over, and have done! Charles, was so Handsome!

I usually have a huge list of things to read, so now I take no more than 4 books per month. Plus, I've already found a few books for my list here, too. Right now I'm reading Running, I like professional literature.

What is it about Dee, am not sure what you mean buy Professional Literature. At the Moment am reading,'Birds of Passage', Henrietta Clives, Travels in South India, 1798 to 1801. Very Interesting, but to expose her two young Daughters to such Danger, don't care for that. You would think Dad would have put his Foot down. But they survived, so that's good. Like a happy ending.

Do you have a mobile library service from which you could order the books you would like to read but not buy, Tina? Not sure how things work in Scotland and especially not in the pandemic. I know here, during lockdown the Council has made arrangements to deliver books to those requesting them. Just a thought.
