Used to make my own when the Children were young, Val, also Rosehip Syrup for the Winter, Cough Mixture, still have the Recipies, and Cheese Spread. My goodness ! feeding three Boys, and a Girl who ate as much, was not easy. but have always loved 'making' Things, forgot the 'Chocolate Spread ! Have Apricots in the Pan, ready for Jam, been chopping them small, you go on to Auto Pilot, when preparing Fruit. Had a Tub of Tesco Cherries, had One, and it tasted fine, so don't know what is going on, must be different makes, anyway, will stick to Tesco, in Future.

Big pot of rhubarb and similar amount of apples cooked and frozen ready for winter crumbles. Have decided to freeze things this year as had a problem with mould on some of my bottled fruits last year! I cooked the rhubarb in soft dark brown sugar which gives it a lovely flavour. The apples I cooked with a little vanilla extract and mixed spice. All now in the freezer!

Tina, can you remember the recipes for your spreads?
Aly - rhubarb...mmm.. We didn't get much rhubarb this year. Our neighbour's tree was overhanging our patch, but he's now cut down the tree, so hopefully next year will be better for the rhubarb.
Like you, Aly, I'm cooking the fruit and freezing it, cooked. Whether it's pies, crumbles or just fruit on the morning porridge, it's worth doing, I reckon!

Oh thanks, Tina. I thought the spreads looked interesting, and just wondered how you made them. I think back to when I was very young and my Mum worked full-time, and cycled to her work, too. These are the sort of recipes that would have been so good for her feeding three strapping young men, and me and my sister (plus Dad!). Look forward to seeing them! Thanks again, Tina, x.

My mixed Peel turned out well, and there is plenty for Xmas, and beyond, but never again, too messy, and two time consuming. Today, am using up the last Tomatoes, making Chutney, and the last Cucumbers, with Dill, and Garlic.

Last week I made quince jam, recipe here: www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/quince_jam/and at the end of the recipe, she suggested 'spicing it up' with other flavours - I added a tablespoonful of vanilla paste to the whole mixture - which, by the way, I cut into tiny cubes, not grated, and it turned out really scrummy.

Our cucumbers are coming along now. I picked the first today and what a difference from the supermarket ones. Daughter and grandson will help out with any going begging. They both eat chunks as snacks. The rest of the family love them too so not sure we will have trouble using them up.

Such a difference, Iris, as you say, from Shop bought, my Daughter takes a whole One to work with her, and eats it like Fruit. Been out and picked more fruit, have Raspberries in Pan, the most useful Fruit of the lot After youngest has phoned will make the Jam. Want Son, coming tomorrow, to cut back Gooseberry Bush, and pick Rhubarb, since I moved it, it has gone Mad, and don't have enough strength in my Arm, to twist it.

The cherry and gooseberry jam is gorgeous - actually tastes very like plum jam. I put the cherry stones in a piece of muslin when cooking the fruit. Not sure if that is the reason the jam had a good flavour. I reckon, ratio-wise, it was 4 parts green, 1 part red gooseberries, and about a quarter cherries. Hardly any cherries really.
