The Cake was not okay, it tasted bitter, so has been given to the Chickens. Am going to make a few quick Scones, as have fresh Blackcurrent Jam, and Cream, just crying out for a Scone .

Making a Coffee and Walnut Sponge. Better get on to it. Have loads of Cream to use up, dunno whether to make Butter with it, or pipe into Whorles, and freeze.

So far today: Date & Oat slices/flapjacks (12 of); Picnic squares including sunflower seeds/oats/malt extract/honey/peanuts/cranberries (15 of); Homemade Malt Loaf by Baking Mad, will be sliced. I have made the filling for beef pasties, and I shall assemble them this afternoon, and freeze till tomorrow, then cook them. I've seen some new recipes for cakes too - Brandied date cake sounds nice; as does some individual fruit cakes... Going to be busy today and tomorrow - 12-portion Bakewell tarts tomorrow (2 or 3 of) What we do to raise funds for charity !!

All sounds lovely, Val, especially the picnic squares. By the way, I've seen the news about the fires in the south of France and wondered whether it affects you (or your property, rather - don't know whether you're here or in France at the mo) at all?
When looking for something in the chest freezer yesterday, I came across a large plastic box full of raspberries, blackcurrants, blueberries and strawberries, last year's crop....it was right down at the bottom of the freezer so I wasn't aware it was there. Having googled, I've found a nice cake recipe, it uses polenta and ground almonds rather than flour, so will give that a go this afternoon. As there are loads of berries, I'll also make a crumble or 2 for the freezer.

Think we will have crumble too..it is cool enough and we have not had one for ages! I also have lots of fruit in the freezer. Might try making a sorbet.

I see Tina, that you made a coffee and walnut cake recently. Two ladies provided a coffee and walnut tray-bake for our Rotary cake stall at the Bike Meet, and it disappeared fairly quickly - a perennial favourite! My bread pudding tray-bake also went quickly (I had brought back from France some lovely bread, but of course, the following day it was a bit stale, so I chopped it up and froze it. This was the basis of the bread pudding - I shall do that again!). 36 large sausage rolls and 12 large pasties were heated in the oven and sold at lunchtime - my friend also made a dozen pasties, and we both provided a mountain of cakes for our stall. Our 'colleagues' cooking the bacon in the kitchen used 29kgs of bacon, and about 400 bread rolls. In all, it was a cooking/serving marathon, from 8am till 4pm.

Strangly, Ian did not like it either, could be down to my Baking, but everybody else seemed to enjoy it. What a Marathon Bake Val, can't wait to see if all those pesky Ants are away, leaving it for Today, but straining at the Bit to get back to One of my Favourite Hobbies.

I'm ok today, thanks Aly. Yes, the beauty of being retired (not that I'm retirement age, of course! ) is that a lot of things can be deferred till another day. Dough is proving in the boiler cupboard, muffins are made.....just found out it's our lovely neighbours' (spaniel Poppy's mum and dad) anniversary today, so the extra lot of muffins are going to them rather than being frozen. Just having a sit down as my back is protesting at standing up all the time, then the dog food and fish pie for tonight's dinner to do.
