This is a sad rant, because initially I was on a high. It is our daughter's birthday today, and despite asking her if there was anything she wanted, she didn't reply for some while, then said she didn't know(!). So, deciding that clothes never seem to be the right colour/size/design, I decided clothes would be a no-no. With thinking cap on, had a look at some unusual jewellery. We spend our Easter week in Cornwall, and I found a guy in St Ives making his own jewellery, and I thought this would be a lovely memento. However, by now, it was Wednesday evening. So, I sent an email and asked if it was possible to send me a piece on Thursday morning and I would pay for guaranteed next day delivery. (This aims to deliver by 1 pm the following day) I was on a high because, unbelievably, this guy told me that if I were to order it first thing on Thursday, then he would make it for me. Amazing or what? At 11.30 he emailed to say he was making it. At 1pm he told me he had posted it. There was a tracking number, too. Brilliant, I was so pleased with myself for having sorted a beautiful present for our daughter. I paid £7.50 for the next-day delivery. This morning, it did not arrive. I checked the tracking number, and the post office had actually admitted that my little parcel had been "mis-sorted". Instead of getting to Swindon main post office (from Truro), it was now in "North West Midlands", and by 5.30 this evening it was in transit to Swindon. I just hope it arrives tomorrow, a day late, but otherwise it won't be delivered till Tuesday, and some of the 'sparkle' has gone now... It's the post office that has let me down, and after all the effort the Cornwall guy has made on my behalf, too.

This is what puts me off on line ordering! I am convinced our postman saves things up until he feel likes coming out to us! Hope your daughter likes it.

So sorry to read your rant, Val. Usually post from Cornwall reaches it's destination next day if posted 1st Class but can take several days from outside the county inwards. That doesn't help you though. Hope the gift arrives asap. We do have some wonderful craftspeople in Cornwall. I ordered a personalised wedding gift recently from a crafter in the county and it arrived 3 days later beautifully packaged and undamaged. Hope the bride and groom appreciate it! The invitation to the wedding specified no gifts BUT money towards the honeymoon would be appreciated. Not sure I like being asked for money but it seems to be the norm these days when most couples have been living together and have everything they need.

I missed your post Val, sorry to read you've been let down by the Post Office, how disappointing and infuriating! Will they give you your £7.50 back? (They blooming well ought to!). I'm sure your daughter will love it anyway, I don't suppose it will matter to her if it's a couple of days late.
Similar thing, I'd ordered online a couple of pedometers for myself and S (to encourage our fitness efforts!) on Friday last week, from the Lloyds Chemist site. Their website said 'order before 6pm for next day click and collect', specifying your local store, so I did, putting in the order mid afternoon and getting confirmation back within a few minutes, it said I would get a text from the local store when the order was ready to collect. Had no text by 11.30 am Saturday so, seeing as they shut at 12.30 on Saturdays, I rang the store, only to be told that they'd had their click and collect orders delivery already, and mine wasn't in it. When I queried it, the lady said it probably didn't include Saturdays! It doesn't state that on the website, well, not in plain sight anyway. She apologised and said it would most likely be in Monday. It wasn't, it was Tuesday. So much for next day delivery. Not that it matters, it wasn't urgent and I wasn't charged extra for next day delivery, but why make a point of putting it on your website if it's not going to happen?
And Iris, I certainly hope the bride and groom DO appreciate your personalised gift! To be honest (and this is just my opinion), I think asking for money towards the honeymoon (or any part of the wedding, actually) is a blooming cheek - if you can't afford to pay for your wedding/honeymoon, then tone it down! Or don't get married at all!

Agree entirely, Sue, no askee for Money, not nice, but the Greeks pin Notes to the Brides Dress, I believe. It is sad when Excitement turns to 'let down', Val, but hope the Piece is beautiful enough to make up for it being late. x

Our water - not just ours, but several neighbours too - has been turned off. There've been Water Board vans in the area over the past couple of weeks, painting blue arrows on the lanes, so clearly getting ready to do some work. But we've had no notifications whatsoever - you'd think they'd tell us if/when they were going to turn the water off, wouldn't you? And supply us with bottled water! Thankfully, I have 4 2 litre bottles in the utility room, but I bet most people don't. Grrr!

Turns out it was a burst water main, the water's just come back on, it was off for about 3 hours. Fortunately, there aren't any babies in our little hamlet, it's mostly older people.

If it has been as warm as where we've been today (just north of Oxford), 3 hours without water really isn't fair. If you'd known, the kettle and other containers would have been filled.

A headline has really annoyed me this morning - "Heroic England crash out of World Cup".
What's 'heroic' about them? They did a job for which they're paid (obscene) amounts of money, they played a game - they didn't save anyone's lives like those divers getting the Thai kids and their coach out of the flooded caves, so how does playing football make them heroes? It doesn't, of course. They're only footballers, for goodness sake. They're not firemen, or policemen, or doctors, or coastguards, or ordinary people who are in the right place at the right time and have the courage to snatch a child out of the way of a speeding car, for instance. They're the REAL heroes.

It's quite bizarre how folks reacted to the football. Last night on the news, grown men saying they've been crying !!! Each to their own, ay?!!

Wasps and flies! What is the point of them? We are inundated with masses of both and they're just so blooming annoying. We've got a heavy duty insect curtain on the front door (we have our front door open most of the time) - it does keep them out to a certain extent (certainly better than not having it at all), but the damn things just come in through all the open windows. I hate them!
